***National Conference on Technology in Physical Education and Sport***

FROM: Mel E. Finkenberg, http://www.tahperd.sfasu.edu
KEN'S NOTE: My feeling is this will be the event of the year for all you cats who love technology and its impact on Kinesiology. I sure have put it on my list of events to attend in 1997.

NASPE is sponsoring a second National Conference on Technology in Physical Education and Sport at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana from July 31-August 3, 1997. The Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit a proposal(s) for a breakout session.

The focus of the conference will be applications of technology in physical
education and sport. These applications include instruction, assessment,
research, communication, organization, administration, etc. The target
audiences include K-12 physical educators, coaches, administrators, and
college/university faculty.

Ball State has an outstanding physical education facility with
state-of-the-art capabilities for use of technology. We will have the
opportunity to utilize MAC and PC computer labs, electronic classrooms,
regular classrooms, gymnasiums, dance studios, and an instructional fitness
center. The audio/visual capabilities are excellent, with most equipment
available on carts for use in most rooms. We are confident that we can
accommodate any presentation needs that are requested by specified dates.

If you have a general question, please contact Charlene Burgeson, NASPE
Program Administrator, at (800)213-7193, ext. 413 or cburgeson=AT=aahperd.org.
If you have a question about facilities and/or equipment, please contact
Marilyn Buck, Conference Chair, at (317)285-1472 or mbuck=AT=bsu.edu.

Please note that all proposals must be postmarked no later than January 15,
1997. You will be informed of the status of your proposal(s) by March 1,
1997.

We hope to hear from you!

CAMPUS COMPUTER GROWTH SLOWED SINCE LAST YEAR
The 1996 Campus Computing Survey results are in -- and indicate that about
25% of college courses use e-mail, up from 20% last year. The 5% increase
was small in comparison to the previous year, which saw growth rate of about
12%. "After a year of tremendous growth, it's not unusual that we see a
period of consolidation," says survey author Kenneth Green. More than half
the schools surveyed had a technology resource center for faculty, but only
one in eight rewarded their faculty for the time they put in on integrating
information technology into their teaching methods. About half the faculty
surveyed had computers, but fewer than a third of the students did. One in
seven campuses surveyed uses a private company to provide students with
Internet accounts. (Chronicle of Higher Education 22 Nov 96 A21)

The Medical Tribune Online Edition
http://www.medtrib.com/

The Medical Tribune, provided by Jobson Publishing, has been issued 21
times a year for over 36 years, and now comes to the web. Aimed at
physicians in family practice, each issue offers articles that, while
research-based, are written so that non-professionals can make use of the
information. In addition to the feature articles and physician forums,
users will appreciate the MD CyberGuide, which provides fully annotated
pointers to medical information elsewhere on the Internet; the annotations
describe not only what each site offers, but how the resource might be
useful to both doctors and patients, all written in a critical yet engaging
style. The Medical Guide also contributes content to "Your Health Daily," a
publication of the New York Times Syndicate directed toward health care
consumers (discussed in the January 5, 1996 Scout Report). [ML]

NETSCAPE PLANS TO EDGE MICROSOFT OFF THE DESKTOP
Netscape Communications is developing software designed to organize a
computer desktop, pushing Microsoft's Windows software off center stage.
Constellation, which is expected to ship in mid-1997, gives the computer the
look of a television screen with a row of buttons down one side. Each
button represents either a Web site to visit or an application program.
Netscape hopes its new product could become a de facto operating system,
with software developers writing their programs for Constellation rather
than Windows. Microsoft plans to introduce a competing product, called
Active Desktop, in the second half of next year. One analyst says
Netscape's new approach to the browser battles shows it's growing up: "Up
until this point it's been primarily a religious battle, with Netscape
saying, it's us or them. Now they're saying, we realize we will not rule
the entire domain. However, what we will do is become the entire container
within which disparate pieces can be used." (Wall Street Journal 20 Nov 96 B10)

Electric Skis!

After years of high scientific interest and commercial
promise, futuristic "smart structures" technology finally
came "schussing" into the real world last fall embedded in a
line of smart skis. A revolutionary piezo control module
developed by ACX serves as "The Brain Inside" the ski. The
K2 "Four" ski, containing the ACX control module, marks
the first time smart structures technology has ever been used
in a commercial product.

"At K2, we have to innovate to maintain our leadership
position in alpine ski technology. We identified smart
technology as an important new direction for skis. Our
partnership with ACX helped us to reducethe cycle time
of bringing the Smart Ski to market. The ACX technology
allowed us to selectively and consistently control dynamic
response in the ski and present the technology in a visible
form. ACX technology is a real product differentiator, and
with it, K2 is staking a firm position as the market leader.
ACX was a big part of the success of the K2 Four."

SMARTER COMPUTERS AHEAD
Microsoft CEO Bill Gates sees much smarter computers on the road ahead: "If
a human assistant works for you over a period of years, your efficiency in
working with him gets dramatically better and he can anticipate your
interests and you can use shorthand ways of communicating. With a computer
today, even if you use it for a couple of years, you are basically working
with it the exact same way. It's not learning in the way a human assistant
would. On the simplest level, the next generation of computers would learn
the kind of information you like to see. They're going to know how you are
reacting to things, and essentially put together, for example, the kind of
newspaper that meets your interests." (Investor's Business Daily 3 Dec 96 A8)

DIGITAL TV ACCORD REACHED
The television and computer industries have reached a compromise on
technical standards for the new generation of digital TV sets, smoothing the
way for a transition to nationwide digital TV service. The agreement failed
to specify a video format, one of the sticking points between the two
industries, but instead lets companies choose formats they think will best
suit consumers' needs. The agreement was hailed as a success by FCC
Chairman Reed Hundt who said it "eliminates needless government regulation
on technical issues better left to the marketplace." Television makers have
said the new sets could be in stores within two years, priced at $1,500 to
$3,000 each. (Wall Street Journal 26 Nov 96 B10)

HELLO? IS THIS A COMPUTER? DO I PLACE IT NEAR MY FACE?
Hudson Institute Fellow Mark Helprin thinks not. "Terrified lest their
children be computer illiterate, lemming parents have pushed the schools
into a computer frenzy in which they spend years learning to use Windows and
WordPerfect. This much like 'Sesame Street,' which, instead of waiting
until a child is five and teaching him to count in an afternoon, devotes
thousands of hours drumming it into him during his underdeveloped infancy.
But while numbers will remain the same, fifth-graders will, when they get to
graduate school, have no contact with Windows 95. The 'teaching' of
computer in the schools may be likened to a business academy in the 1920s
founded for the purpose of teaching the telephone: 'When you hear the bell,
pick up the receiver, place it thusly near your face, and say 'Hello?'"

Faith in the PC and Internet (Gates)

In his keynote address here yesterday, Bill Gates predicted
that the PC will gain power, not lose it, in the age of the
Internet. Gates' remarks followed Monday's keynote by
Intel's Andy Grove, in which the Intel chief said the
industry will require more powerful machines that display
life-like visuals and audio to compete with TV for consumers
attention. Both Gates and Grove, arguably the most powerful
figures in the information technology industry, said the
Internet will play a pervasive role in enabling new
technologies and innovations to reach a broader audience.
That theme was carried further Wednesday morning in the
keynote address of James Barksdale, CEO of Netscape
Communications Corp., and by the 550 companies featuring
Internet-related products and services at COMDEX, nearly
double last year's number.

Gates predicted that the Internet will also change the
relationship between customer and business. Instead of
establishing a relationship with, say, a PC company once
every two years when someone purchases a new PC, Gates
envisions a stream of email customized to the user, and
informing him or her about "clip art we've got on our Web
site, new templates, usage hints, some updates that we might
have available, or even new components that you can just
click and have those come down. So there won't be this big
one-time event."
