QUOTE OF THE DAY-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -
"There are three kinds of death in this world. There's heart death, there's brain death, and there's being off the network."
-- Guy Almes
CYBER HIGH SCHOOL
How about a High School with no clubby cliques, no pressure to be
cool, and no anxiety-ridden dating rituals? Sound too good to be
true? Well it is -- but maybe not for much longer. Consider "Cyber
High," a web site that bills itself as "a private, on-line, college
preparatory school." The student body is worldwide and the
curriculum is designed for the motivated individual student.
Hah! you say. How tough can this be? They probably have
courses on how to play Duke Nukem or something. But wait.
Cyber High claims to have a "classical" approach to education
using the great books, historical documents, math, and science.
Latin is offered as a foreign language. Qualified teachers run all
classes, and students are carefully evaluated through course work
and direct communication.
On the negative side, Cyber High is awaiting official accreditation
and costs $4,200 a year in tuition. It is also tough to image how
they could field a non-virtual football team (or soccer team, for that
matter).

WEB EDUCATION LISTINGS AND RESOURCES
Educators at all levels have jumped onto the net with gusto. Name
anything to do with schools or education, and you can be sure the
topic has a site. More likely it will have a dozen sites -- or perhaps
more. This is a good news/bad news kind of situation that mirrors
the Internet as a whole: lots of information but no easy way to
navigate among it.
Fortunately, there are sites that work to identify, categorize, and list
educational information at other sites. This makes information
retrieval easier, but even the sites that list other sites are legion.
A few of these resource sites that CinC has visited and liked are
listed below.

eDirectory
http://www.edirectory.com/
If you are searching for information from a particular country and would
like to access search indexes based there, then the eDirectory may be for
you. This meta-site is a model of simplicity: the first page currently
lists 39 countries for which search indexes have been identified, and
clicking on the country's name takes the user to a page that lists the
search engines specific to it. The user may submit a search request using
the form on the page, or may go to the search index itself by clicking on
its name. There are no annotations, no descriptions of the indexes' scope
or coverage; but if what you need is access to a wider range of sites than
the usual US-based search engines give, a visit to eDirectory may put you
on the right path.

WEB TOOLS AND SITES
FROM: The Kleinman Report 9/9/96
News.com is by far the best source for Internet news around. It is
updated several times a day, often with exclusive breaking news.
What makes News.com so great is how it pulls together the essential
news into a single site, making getting Internet news an easy task,
not a full time job.

This site is billed as the “most comprehensive, user-friendly

right on the money. The sports subjects are broken down into
three main areas (Spectator Sports, Outdoor Adventure and
Recreational sports), each of which contain dozens of terrific

try the "Web's only All-Sports Search Engine". Either way,

Infoseek Ultra
http://ultra.infoseek.com/
What's so different about this new search engine you ask?
A great number of things! For starters, it produces real-time
results. No more waiting weeks to search for sites pertaining
to breaking news, or those you're certain are online. Secondly,
it produces enormously accurate results and some of the
speediest returns we've seen since Alta Vista premiere days.
Most importantly, the results are all live url's. Infoseek Ultra
weeds out millions of dead and duplicate links on a regular basis.
Any search engine can claim to be the 'biggest', but in actuality,
only 15 million Webpages are 'alive'. Of course, your opinion is
what counts most -- so why not stop by and take it for a test
drive? It's free for everyone!

TECHNOLOGY / COMMUNICATION
FROM: C O M P U T E R I N D U S T R Y D A I L Y Sept. 3, 1996
Insider's Viewpoint
Failing to enter the voice-on-Net (VON) arena may be a costly
mistake for telephone companies. Few, if any, traditional telcos
are participating in developing a protocol for sending voice over
the Internet. Of course, the small, innovative companies working
on these features could not be happier. Not having Ma Bell or her
babies looking over their shoulders is a blessing.
A number of vendors are developing methods for squeezing more
voice data through "skinny pipes." Once the technology makes it
practical for non-techies to use the Internet for free or low-cost
long distance calls, however, you can expect the telcos to start
screaming for government protection of their profits. Although
the politicians may be dumb enough to fall for this scam, I doubt
if consumers will go along.

TECHNOLOGY / COMMUNICATION
FROM: IDeAnet, Volume 1, Number 7
CHANGE TO TOP-LEVEL DOMAINS
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), currently responsible
for delegating the top-level domains used in URLs: .COM, .ORG, EDU, NET,
etc, has issued a call to all top-level domains over the future of
naming those domains.
Their current plan is to create new international top-level domains and
new commercial registries (not the Internet) to manage those domains.
In keeping with Internet tradition, all net users are invited to
contribute their opinion. Those interested can subscribe to the mailing
list newdom-request=AT=iiia.org. Information about this proposal is
available on the Web as well, at http://www.iiia.org/lists/newdom/. The
IANA proposal itself can be found at ftp://ietf.cnri.reston.va.us/
internet-drafts/draft-postel-iana-itld-admin-01.txt.
If the plan is accepted (by early 1997, according to many experts)
you'll end up seeing commercial and international URLs that look like
http://www.industrial.plastics
or http://www.spock.klingon.
