HIGHER EDUCATION
KEN'S NOTE: Sally does just a great service to our field by maintaining this resource. There are some terrific bargins to be had.

SOFTSHARE is a service project which is operated by the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance at California State University, Fresno and provides software for use in physical education classes..

I started the project many years ago by searching various locations and gleaning public domain and shareware software relative to physical education. After compiling a catalog, I made the software available to other educators through the project called SOFTSHARE. Software is available for the Apple II, IBM and MacIntosh platforms. The SOFTSHARE catalog has, in the past, been distributed free of charge, but is now being distributed by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) through the American Alliance for health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Bookstore/Catalog. The catalog may be purchased through the bookstore via the following toll-free number
- (800) 321-0789 at a cost of $3.00 plus $1.50 for S&H.

Programs, which are still being distributed through the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance here at California State University are available in the following areas/categories: activity aids, administration, Appleworks, computer aids, exercise physiology, biomechanics, fitness testing, games, grading, graphics, health & fitness, hyper- card, instruction, resources, sports stats, statistics, teacher's aids, utilities, wellness, windows, writing aids. Lots of software to choose from.

Let me know if I can be of help. (209) 278-2650.

Subject: Great Canadian Scientists, eh!
A Contest for Science & Technology Week

Great Canadian Scientist: http://fas.sfu.ca/css/gcs Great
Quiz Site: http://www.science.ca/quiz

The Canadian Scientists website has proven so popular that Industry Canada
will make it a Main Event for National Science and Technology Week '96. On
October 18 a national contest will award t-shirts and CD-ROMs to those
users who score highest in the online quiz. Visit
http://www.science.ca/quiz to play.

The project profiles about 20 scientists in depth. A reference section
contains a list of short biographies for about 150 other great Canadian
scientists. The scientists were chosen from a survey of universities and
scientific associations to reflect a balance of discipline, region and
gender. The website employs hypertext links which allow users to jump
around following threads of related subjects, sometimes all over the world.
An online interactive quiz keeps track of scores, and an Ask a Scientist
feature enables people to ask questions and get answers from real Canadian
scientists via email.

Free Internet service to schools and libraries

Clinton proposed a $100 million plan to expand the reach of
the Internet. The proposal includes giving free Internet
service to schools and libraries and upgrading the Internet
to make it 100 to 1,000 times faster than the existing
system. Clinton announced a three-pronged strategy to make
Internet access universal.

* The Federal Communications Commission to approve
that schools and libraries be
given basic Internet services free. Telecommunications
companies would pay for this by putting money into a fund,
much as they currently subsidize poor and rural phone users.

* Have industry leaders would help raise money to match
government technology-literacy grants to buy computers for
schools and ensure that teachers are properly trained.

* Develop a new generation of the information
superhighway that would be 100 to 1,000 times faster than
the existing computer system, which is rapidly reaching
capacity.

McGRAW-HILL PLANS E-JOURNALS
McGraw-Hill, the information company that publishes numerous books and
periodicals, has developed several electronic journals called McGraw-Hill
Science Online, and will begin to test them early in 1997. The journals,
which will have full academic peer-review to ensure quality of the
scientific information, are expected to speed up the information
dissemination process as well as make it considerably more economical.

SPECIALIZED SEARCH ENGINES NEEDED FOR RESEARCH
Most scholars are agreeing that the average, run-of-the-mill Internet search engine doesn't produce much of value to their academic research efforts. One philosophy professor at the University of Evansville has taken matters into his own hands and created a search engine for his area of expertise, the ancient world. His engine, called Argos, filters out unwanted information by limiting searches to preselected Web sites deemed by a group of editors to be scholarly and topical. "We're imagining a whole series of these search engines to serve academe," he says. The Argos search engine can be found at http://argos.evansville.edu/. Subject: Syllabus Database

Hello,
Planet Innovation, part of the South Central Regional Technology
Consortium, has developed a syllabus database. We are inviting people who
have developed syllabi to upload theirs. The goal behind the conception of
this database was to share information about what teachers are doing in
their classrooms, both K-12 and higher education. The tool is completely
automated and allows for a variety of formats. If you would like to
upload a syllabus or look at what others are uploading go to
http://planet.rtec.org, you will have to fill out the new user registration
form. By requiring unique user names only the user who uploads the
syllabus is able to edit it. Once you have logged in simply follow the
technology tools menu to the Syllabus database.

Report Sees 100 Million Internet Users By 1998

The Gartner Group predicts about 100 million people will be
using the Internet by the end of 1998. Cayne told a Gartner
Group technology symposium here that projecting the number
of Internet users is nearly impossible, because of the
fast-changing numbers, as more new users log on every day.
"By the year 2000, we expect the Internet to become the dial
tone of data communications around the world," Cayne said.

VOICEMAIL OVER THE NET
Several voice-messaging companies, including Lucent Technologies, Northern
Telecom and Siemens Rolm Communications, are working with the Electronic
Messaging Association to set standards for sending voicemail and fax
attachments over IP networks. The group will submit its Voice Profile for
Internet Messaging draft specification to the Internet Engineering Task
Force before the end of the year. The technology would allow companies save money by moving their voicemail systems to the Internet or private IP wide area networks, thus consolidating information traffic on one network, says a Nortel standards engineer. (Information Week 7 Oct 96 p89)
